6 killed, another injured in head-on crash on K-10 in Lawrence
Six people were killed in a head-on crash on Kansas Highway 10 Thursday evening, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the crash between a westbound Ford Fusion and an eastbound GMC around 6:40 p.m. Thursday at mile marker 385 on U.S Highway 40, Jenn Hethcoat, public information officer for the sheriff’s office, said via email Friday morning. That’s just west of the interchange with U.S. Highway 59, or Iowa Street.
Both vehicles were on fire when deputies arrived. The GMC was partially burned, and its female driver and sole occupant was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, Hethcoat said. The Ford Fusion was completely burned and six occupants were killed, Hethcoat said.
The highway was closed for several hours as investigators worked the crash, according to social media posts from the sheriff’s office.
Further information was not immediately available Friday morning.
The sheriff’s office is seeking information from any witnesses to the crash. If you witnessed the crash or events immediately leading to it, the sheriff’s office asks that you please call 785-841-0007. You will be asked to leave your information and a deputy will return your call, according to a Friday social media post from the department.
