A girl was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries after a reported “altercation between two parties” Thursday at Free State High School, police say.
Officers were dispatched to the school, 4700 Overland Drive, around 12:35 p.m. Thursday, emergency radio traffic monitored by the Journal-World indicated. The call was initially reported as a child out of control, said Patrick Compton, spokesperson for the Lawrence Police Department.
Compton said he did not yet know the nature or severity of the girl’s injuries as of 1:15 p.m. Thursday. Officers were also unsure of the nature of the altercation or why it happened, but Compton said school resource officers were working with other investigators.
District spokesperson Julie Boyle said via email that Free State called an ambulance after a student was injured in a fight in the school parking lot, but the ambulance did not transport the student.
Asked whether she could confirm if the other person involved in the incident was also a student, she said the school was still investigating and there may have been more than two individuals involved.
