After pointing a revolver at a driver on a major Lawrence street, court documents allege, a man and a woman holed up inside an apartment, telling police, “We ain’t coming out.”

Chandler Allen Grey, 27, and Domonique Calvian Edwards, 22, of Lawrence, were arrested late the evening of Aug. 20. Both were later charged with two felonies, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and interference with law enforcement.

The Journal-World requested and recently received the police affidavit supporting Grey’s and Edwards’ arrests. Allegations in affidavits have not been proved in court, and all defendants in criminal cases should be presumed not guilty unless and until proved otherwise.

The relationship between Grey and Edwards is not clear from court documents, but Facebook profiles that appear to belong to them say that they are engaged.

According to the affidavit:

A man called police at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, and officers met him at an automotive business just west of Sixth and Iowa streets. He said he had been heading westbound on Sixth Street in the northernmost lane when he stopped for the light at Wisconsin Street. He told police he heard a honk and when he turned to his left, he saw a blond woman driving a silver four-door car with Grey in the passenger seat. He described Grey as a white man with short brown hair, wearing a white tank top.

The man told police he then shrugged his shoulders, unsure of what the problem was, and then the couple — later identified as Grey and Edwards — told him to “(expletive) off,” so he said the same in return.

When the light changed, the man said, Grey held his right hand out the window and pointed a revolver in his direction and twice made a motion acting as though the revolver was recoiling from being fired. The man told police he feared he was going to be shot. The man said the vehicle then sped up and turned into Highpointe Apartments, 2001 W. Sixth St.

The man stopped in the automotive business’s parking lot to call dispatch, and he said a motorcyclist pulled in and told him that he’d witnessed what happened. Police were able to contact that man, according to the affidavit, and he corroborated the alleged victim’s statement.

Officers then went to try to find the vehicle at the apartment complex; they found it and reportedly saw an empty leather holster in the back seat and found a purse holding IDs for Grey and Edwards. A person in the clubhouse told police he or she “saw Grey pull Edwards by the hair” and then saw Edwards run and kick open an apartment door.

Officers then knocked on the door for a minute and asked Edwards to come out so they could make sure she was OK, to which she responded, “We ain’t coming out,” according to the affidavit.

Police then got a search warrant to look for the gun, ammunition and any documents proving ownership of the gun or of who was living in the apartment. The couple did not respond when police knocked again, so police used a ram to open the door.

Officers reportedly found the couple lying in bed, and Grey was wearing a white tank top as the alleged victim had described. Both were handcuffed and taken downtown to the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center for interviews; neither waived Miranda rights, and they declined to speak about the incident, the affidavit says.

In their search, officers found a .38-caliber Amadeo Rossi revolver-style handgun under the bed with two like rounds in the cylinder, according to the affidavit. They also reportedly found six 20-gauge shotgun shells on the nightstand.

As part of their bond requirements, Grey and Edwards were required to not have contact with each other. The judge lifted that order on Sept. 11, but they are not to discuss their case, according to online court records.

Grey and Edwards both have plea hearings scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25.

Appointed defense attorneys for Grey and Edwards did not respond to a Journal-World email seeking comment for this article. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office declined to release either defendant’s booking photo to the Journal-World.
