Lawrence police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at Playerz Sports Bar and resulted in multiple injuries.

Officers were called to the bar, 1910 Haskell Ave., around 2 a.m. Sunday after a shooting took place in the bar’s parking lot, police said in a press release.

Emergency radio traffic monitored by the Journal-World and its partner Operation 100 News indicated that two people were shot and both left the area before officers arrived.

Police located and chased a suspect vehicle, which came to a stop in the area of 23rd Street and O’Connell Road around 2:10 a.m., according to radio traffic.

Officers discovered the suspect in his car with serious, life-threatening injuries from what appeared to be a gunshot wound, police said in the release. An air ambulance responded to the area and transported one person in critical condition to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, around 2:40 a.m., according to radio traffic.

At least one shooting victim walked into the emergency room of Lawrence’s hospital shortly after the shooting, radio traffic indicated. A male victim and a female victim had serious but not life-threatening injuries as a result of the shooting, police said in the release.

The stretch of 23rd Street between Harper Street and East Hills Drive was closed for hours Sunday morning as investigators continued to work at the scene. The road had reopened as of 8 a.m., police said.

The Journal-World has reported on multiple shootings at the same bar in the past few years.

On Jan. 17, 2016, a 32-year-old Lawrence man was shot and injured when he was reportedly trying to break up a fight at the bar. Geoffrey E. Morrison agreed to a plea and was sentenced in July 2017 to a year of probation in that shooting.

On Sept. 23, 2017, a man was reportedly shot at Playerz and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Much about that incident remains a mystery as witnesses were not cooperative with police, the Journal-World reported.

Police are asking anyone with information that could help the investigation to call Crime Stoppers at 785-843-8477 or the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509.
