Attempted vehicle stop leads to suspects stealing another vehicle in south Lawrence

A pair of suspects in a stolen vehicle case led local law enforcement on a car chase through south Lawrence and then escaped on foot, according to information from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a stolen vehicle near 23rd and Harper streets in eastern Lawrence, Jenn Hethcoat, public information officer with the sheriff’s office, said via email.

Instead of stopping, the vehicle continued to flee on O’Connell Road and then onto 31st Street. The vehicle ended up near the area behind the Southwinds 12 movie theater in south Lawrence. Heathcoat said the two suspects, a male and a female, then left the scene on foot and ended up fleeing the area in a second stolen vehicle.

Hethcoat did not release any further details about the incident or the suspects.
