Lawrence police responded to an incident they now suspect to be a swatting call, according to a department news release.

Dispatchers received a call from a man claiming to have shot his wife, the release said.

Officers responded around 1 a.m. Wednesday to a home in the 2400 block of Cedarwood Avenue, then learned that the call was “a probable attempt at swatting, stemming from a disagreement in an online video game chat room,” the release says.

The incident is under investigation. Patrick Compton, a department spokesman, said police are investigating the possibility that the call came from out of the country.

A swatting case in Wichita made national headlines in December 2017. In that case, a 28-year-old father of two, Andrew Finch, was killed when police responded to a call that said there had been a homicide and hostage situation in his home, according to Associated Press reports. Police later found that Finch was not involved in the video game or the dispute.

A 25-year-old Los Angeles resident, Tyler Barriss, 26, pleaded guilty to 51 federal charges and was sentenced in March to 20 years in prison for making the bogus emergency calls.
