Police searching for 2 people suspected of forgery, fleeing

Local police are searching for a man and woman suspected of forging checks in Lawrence over the weekend.

The Lawrence Police Department responded to a call at 7 p.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of Fairfield Street for a man and a woman allegedly trying to use a checkbook belonging to someone else, the department said in a Monday news release.

The police identified a car at a nearby gas station that matched the description of the suspects’ vehicle. When the police attempted to speak to the man and woman associated with the vehicle, the suspects fled. Police began a pursuit of the suspects’ vehicle but ended it in the interest of public safety. Police later found the vehicle abandoned.

Patrick Compton, a police spokesman, said police were seeking more information in the case and asked that anyone who witnessed the pursuit or believed they may have been a victim to call dispatch at 785-832-7509.

No arrests had been made in the case as of Monday afternoon, Compton said.
