Police: Vehicle stolen from Lawrence car wash after it was cleaned

Lawrence police say they’re investigating after a vehicle was reported stolen from a car wash in south Lawrence.

Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at Auto Plaza Car Wash, 2828 Four Wheel Drive, at about 4:35 p.m. Feb. 13, Lawrence Police Officer Derrick Smith said.

According to Smith, a driver left the keys in a silver, four-door 2010 Lexus while it was being washed by the employees of the business. Following the washing, an unknown suspect stole the car before the driver could retrieve it, Smith said.

More than a week later, the car has not been recovered. Smith said the case is still under investigation.

Ivan Hollins, manager for car wash, said he was aware of the theft and is still looking into it. He said the car was stolen by a “bystander who was outside to claim the car” and not an employee.

Hollins said the incident is the first time a car was stolen from the car wash and the business is taking precautions to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

“It took us all by surprise,” he said.
