Lawrence man reportedly headed to strip club after alleged assault with gun at downtown business
A 23-year-old Lawrence man was arrested at a strip club early Saturday morning on suspicion of an alleged aggravated assault at a different business about an hour prior.
Sgt. Amy Rhoads, public affairs officer for the Lawrence Police Department, told the Journal-World via email that officers responded to a business in the 700 block of New Hampshire Street around 12:30 a.m. Saturday regarding a disturbance with weapons.
Officers were told there was a verbal altercation between two men inside the business that moved outside when it became physical, Rhoads said. When asked to leave, one of the men went to his vehicle and returned “brandishing what is believed to be a firearm,” she wrote.
The man then left the area in his vehicle, which police found around 1:40 a.m. at a business in the 900 block of North Second Street in North Lawrence, according to Rhoads and the Douglas County Jail booking log. The address belongs to Allstars Gentlemen’s Club.
As of Saturday afternoon, the man was being held in jail without bond. Rhoads said an affidavit had been submitted to the Douglas County district attorney’s office to consider charges.
Court records indicate that in July, the same man was released from probation in a 2018 court case.
