A 34-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Friday and later charged with a violent sex crime, according to police and the Douglas County Jail booking log.

Just before 1 a.m. Friday, Lawrence police officers were called to the 700 block of Lincoln Street to reports of a disturbance possibly involving a sex crime, Sgt. Amy Rhoads said via email. Officers took a man into custody at the scene. Rhoads said LPD could not release any more information Friday afternoon because the incident involves a possible sex crime.

Donavan Ryan Hiller, 34, was arrested at his home in the 700 block of Lincoln Street at 1:18 a.m. Friday, according to the booking log. He was charged with three felonies and a misdemeanor involving a 39-year-old victim: aggravated sexual battery against a victim overcome by force or fear, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm or disfigurement, criminal threat and criminal restraint.

Online Kansas Department of Corrections records show Hiller has previously been convicted of criminal threat in Douglas County. He has been on intensive supervision probation in Douglas County for a fourth or subsequent DUI conviction out of Russell County from 2018, the records show.

The booking log indicates that Hiller’s bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety, and his next court appearance is set for Tuesday in Douglas County District Court. He remained in jail as of Saturday afternoon.

The Journal-World requested Hiller’s booking photo from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office but did not immediately receive a response Friday about whether it would be released.
