Sheriff’s office IDs Lawrence man killed in accident west of Eudora; 21-year-old was a KU student
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has verified the identity of a man who was killed in a single-vehicle crash in July.
Avery Mojica, 21, of Lawrence, was the only occupant of his vehicle, heading northbound in the 1300 block of East 1900 Road around 11:45 p.m. Friday, July 26. The vehicle then left the road just north of Kansas Highway 10 and the Twin Oaks Golf Complex west of Eudora, Jenn Hethcoat, a public information officer with the sheriff’s office, wrote in a news release at the time.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene to find the crashed vehicle engulfed in flames after it had left the roadway and crashed into a tree, according to the same release.
An obituary published by the Kansas City Star on Aug. 8 says Mojica was a math and accounting student at the University of Kansas and a champion Scrabble player who enjoyed chess, bowling, creating word puzzles and more. He is survived by his parents and a brother, the obituary says.
“His loved ones marveled at his unique, brilliant mind and were inspired by his constant perseverance,” the obituary says. “His heart was huge. He will be missed beyond measure.”
