Story updated at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25:

One person was found shot early Sunday morning after local law enforcement agencies responded to a report of gunshots just outside North Lawrence.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called around 2 a.m. Sunday to the 1400 block of U.S. Highway 40, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jenn Hethcoat said in an email. The area is near the intersection of U.S. Highway 24/40 and U.S. Highway 24/59, which is also known as Teepee Junction.

As deputies responded, Lawrence police officers witnessed a vehicle leaving the area at high speed and stopped it near Sixth and Mississippi streets in Lawrence, Hethcoat said. There, one person was found with a gunshot wound to the leg that was not life-threatening, and medics took that person to an area hospital, Hethcoat said.

No other people reported gunshot wounds related to the incident, and no arrests had been made as of 2 p.m. Sunday, Hethcoat said.

Other details about the incident were unclear Sunday. A Lawrence Police Department spokesman referred questions about the incident to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Hethcoat said the incident was under active investigation and that the sheriff’s office would have no further information to release Sunday.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 785-843-8477.
