One injured in Sunday night shooting; no arrests made yet

One man was found shot late Sunday night near 23rd Street, the Lawrence Police Department has confirmed.

Just after 11 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of W. 23rd Street, police spokesman Patrick Compton said early Monday morning via email. Officers found two men at the scene, and one of them had been shot.

According to emergency radio traffic at the time, the wounded man was flown by emergency medical helicopter to an area hospital with injuries that were deemed serious. Radio traffic indicated the LifeStar helicopter landed in Broken Arrow Park. Compton on Monday morning said the extent of the man’s injuries were unknown to him.

Police did not provide a more specific location of the incident, but the 700 block of West 23rd Street is near the intersection of 23rd and Louisiana streets.

Compton said the second person found at the scene was interviewed by police and released. He said the investigation of the incident is ongoing, and police are still working to determine whether a crime occurred. No arrests have been made.
