Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical responders were called to a Lawrence hotel Monday afternoon to investigate mysterious containers of liquid found on the property.

Division Chief Justin Temple said staff at Quality Inn & Suites Lawrence, 2309 Iowa St., discovered two clear, approximately 10-gallon containers of fluid during a routine check of the property.

LDCFM was called in shortly after 12:30 p.m.

The LDCFM hazardous materials team used on-site testing to determine the liquid was most likely diesel fuel, Temple said. The team doesn’t handle cleanup in these cases, though. Instead, responders worked with the hotel’s manager to call a hazmat company from Olathe to come dispose of the liquid, he said.

Temple said the one missing piece of the puzzle is how the containers got there — no one witnessed them being dropped off there.
