Story updated at 9 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2019:

Crews battled a fire in the basement of a southeastern Lawrence home on Thursday afternoon.

The fire at the house at 2726 Maverick Lane started at about 4:40 p.m., Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Shift Commander Doug Green said, and firefighters noticed smoke coming from the front door when they arrived.

Green said the fire was only in the basement, and crews were able to contain it by 4:58 p.m.

“It was really isolated to one room,” Green said. “There may be some smoke damage throughout the house, but the fire was contained to the basement.”

No one was home at the time of the fire, which was reported by neighbors, and no injuries occurred, Green said Thursday evening in an email to the Journal-World. The department determined that a malfunctioning clothes dryer started the fire.

Green estimated the damage to the home at around $1,500.
