A woman who was killed in an attack Wednesday while leaving an event at a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C., was a graduate of the University of Kansas.

The woman, Sarah Milgrim, and her fiancé, Yaron Lischinsky, an Israeli citizen, were staff members of the Israeli Embassy in Washington and were engaged to be married.

Milgrim graduated from KU in 2021, according to a statement from KU Hillel.

“Sarah’s bright spirit and passion for the Jewish community touched everyone fortunate enough to know her,” the statement said.

Milgrim served on KU Hillel’s Board of Directors while at KU and “exemplified the values we hold dear.”

Hillel has asked those in the community to contact KU Hillel for mental health resources and support.

“In the face of such hateful violence, we come together as a community to support one another and to honor Sarah’s memory,” the statement said.

The couple were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum when the suspect, who had been seen pacing outside the museum, approached a group of four people and opened fire, Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said at a news conference.

The gunman, identified by police as Elias Rodriguez, 31, of Chicago, then walked into the museum, was detained by event security and began chanting, “Free, free Palestine,” Smith said.
