A new eco-friendly house on New York Street designed and built by University of Kansas architecture students will be open for the public to view on Saturday.

The house at 1040 New York St. was built by graduate students in the architecture school’s Studio 804 capstone class, which is intended to give students hands-on practical experience in the design and construction process. Like past Studio 804 homes, this one incorporates a variety of environmentally friendly features, including solar panels on the roof.

About 1,200 people came out to see last year’s project at its open house, said professor Dan Rockhill, and he hopes to exceed that number of visitors this year.

The open house is on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours will last about 20 minutes, and there will be areas around the house to keep cool if the weather necessitates, Rockhill said.
