Construction projects were back in full swing on the University of Kansas campus as temperatures significantly warmed in recent weeks — notably on the football stadium and at Potter Lake.
Workers on Monday poured a new concrete spillway under the old stone bridge at Potter Lake, which is actually a pond that was built in 1911. Last spring, KU announced that Potter Lake was set to get a major renovation, including dredging to restore the lake closer to its original depth of 18 feet. The removal of years of sediment was a significant aspect of the $1.2 million project because it was expected to improve the lake’s overall ecosystem.

Nearby, work has progressed on the football stadium, though rain may put a damper on things temporarily.
KU has spent a reported $448 million to rebuild the west side and north end of the stadium, which is expected to open in August.

The renovated stadium is one piece of a two-part Gateway Project that, all told, is expected to eventually amount to $759 million in development at the site.
The second part envisions an upscale Marriott hotel, a mix of restaurants and retailers, more than 400 new student apartments and 20,000-square-foot plaza area for outdoor entertainment near 11th and Mississippi streets.
