Japanese drums, dance groups, traditional food on tap for upcoming East Asian festival at KU

An event that celebrates a variety of East Asian traditions is set for next week on the University of Kansas campus.

The Mid-Autumn Festival hosted by the KU Center for East Asian Studies will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the Kansas Union on KU’s Lawrence campus.

The event will feature a trio of performances from groups that highlight Japanese drum music and a variety of East Asian dances.

House of Dragons, a K-pop and hip hop dance group, will perform at 6:30 p.m.. Three Trails Taiko, a Japanese drum group, will perform at 7 p.m.. The KU Lion Dance Club will end the event with a performance at 7:30 p.m.

The event also include video presentations of several East Asian folktales, and also will include face-painting, coloring and other activities for children. The first 500 attendees will receive free mooncakes. Student organizations will be selling many traditional East Asian dishes, including matcha tea, mochi cake, rice balls, and fried rice.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated in many East Asian countries. The Lawrence event is free to attend and open to the entire community.
