University of Kansas faculty members and students will be featured on an upcoming panel discussion about the anti-government uprising in Iran.

Members of the public can attend the panel discussion at noon on Wednesday at the Sabatini Multicultural Resource Center on KU’s Lawrence campus.

The panel will include KU students who are members of the Iranian community. The panel will be moderated by Mike Wuthrich, associate director of the Center for Global & International Studies, and Jackie Brinton, chair of the Department of Religious Studies.

Protests have been underway in Iran since mid-September following the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being acused of violating Iran’s hijab laws. Human rights groups monitoring the situation have reported that hundreds of protesters have died in Iran.

“While so much of the focus on Iran has been leveled at its institutions of power — the Supreme Leader Khamenei and the menacing Revolutionary Guard Corps — the current protests highlight once again, in significant ways, the powerful history of popular protest in Iran and the dynamic spirit of its people, many of whom are currently a wonderful part of our KU community,” Wuthrich said.
