The University of Kansas will rededicate its Vietnam Memorial in a special ceremony on Veterans Day, the university has announced.

KU Chancellor Douglas Girod will preside over the rededication ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday as part of a weeklong series of events KU has had around the Veterans Day holiday.

The Vietnam Memorial, dedicated in 1986, became the first on-campus war memorial in the entire country to recognize those who died in the Vietnam War, according to KU officials. In addition to laying a wreath at the memorial, Girod will rededicate the memorial and add a second star beside the name of Maj. Glenn McCubbin. The second star recognizes that McCubbin’s remains have been found and identified.

The event is open to the public. The Vietnam Memorial is just a bit southwest of the Spencer Art Museum off Memorial Drive.

In addition to the memorial event, KU Dining Services is offering a free meal on Veterans Day to any veteran at any campus dining location.
