KU, Lied Center to host Powwow and Indigenous Cultures Festival next month

The University of Kansas and the Lied Center are set to host a daylong event next month to celebrate Native American traditions and culture.

KU’s First Nations Student Association will host the event from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 9 at the grounds of the Lied Center on KU’s West Campus. The event will include two sessions of a traditional Native American powwow, with the first session beginning at noon and the second at 6 p.m.

Other events planned for the day include:

• 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.: Local Indigenous consultant and historian Jancita Warrington will provide an introductory course on the traditions surrounding a powwow, including explanations of various songs, dance styles and cultural regalia.

• 1 p.m.: State Rep. Christina Haswood, a Native American legislator from Lawrence, will read from “Sofia Valdez, Future Prez” by Andrea Beaty. Also, Alex Red Corn, of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma, will provide an lecture titled “Indian Education 101.”

• 2 p.m. A roundtable conversation of Indigenous authors will feature Jimmy Beason, of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma and U.S. Congresswoman Sharice Davids, a Kansas City-area lawmaker who also is part of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin.

• 3 p.m.: Theresa Milk, a Lakota mother and grandmother and author of “Haskell Institute: 19th Century Stories of Sacrifice and Survival,” will discuss her work surrounding the history of the institute.

• 3:30 p.m.: Davids will read from her book “Sharice’s Big Voice: A Native Kid Becomes a Congresswoman.”

• 4 p.m.: Beason will read from his book “Native Americans in History: A History Book for Kids.”

Also, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., crafts and activities for children will be available throughout the grounds. Native American art and food also will be for sale during the event. Attendees who plan to watch the powwow are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, as other seating will be limited.

Several events also are planned leading up to the April 9 festival. The first is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Cider Gallery, 810 Pennsylvania St. The East Lawrence gallery will celebrate the opening of its Indigenous Arts Initiative Exhibit as part of Lawrence’s Final Friday’s art night.
