KU engineering and law schools receive $2 million gift from late real estate developer

A University of Kansas alumnus who was successful in the real estate industry has left $2 million to the university’s engineering and law schools.

The estate of Dean Frisbie recently gave $1 million each to the two schools, the KU Endowment Association has announced. The gifts are unrestricted, meaning each school can use the funds to tackle needs as they see fit.

Frisbie received degrees in both engineering and law while attending KU in the early 1950s. He went on to have a successful career in the San Francisco area that included developing multiple properties, including a vineyard and winery that ultimately was purchased by E. & J. Gallo Winery.

Frisbie, who died earlier this year, was a native of Mission in Johnson County and grew up in a prominent area construction family that was instrumental in constructing the dams for Perry and Tuttle Creek reservoirs.

After serving in the U.S Army, Frisbie started his career with Standard Oil in California and later went to work for the real estate company Coldwell Banker before starting his own development business in the Santa Clara, Calif., area.
