University of Kansas students now have one more week to withdraw from their fall classes and still get their full tuition money back.
Just three days ahead of an unprecedented fall semester taking place in the middle of a global pandemic, KU Provost Barbara Bichelmeyer announced that as a result of efforts from KU’s student government leaders, the university would extend the deadline to receive 100% of tuition money back through Sept. 4.
KU will also extend the withdrawal deadline for the beginning of the spring semester one week, from Feb. 5 to Feb. 12.
Bichelmeyer said the decision was reached after considering the revisions to the schedule of classes for the fall semester and ongoing concerns related to the pandemic, and it would give students an extra bit of time to determine whether new class formats are the right fit.
“During the summer, instructors were asked to revamp their courses to make them engaging and rewarding as in-person courses, hybrid courses and online courses,” she wrote in a campus message. “Still, we are aware that students have choices, they have different learning styles and many will have personal situations that affect their ability to be successful as learners.”
After Sept. 4, KU students will still have a period of time to withdraw from a class and receive 50% of their tuition money.
KU Student Body Vice President Grant Daily told the Journal-World the change in policy would be a needed relief for the student body.
“In a time of such anxiety, it is wonderful to see the university show care toward its students,” he said.
KU’s fall semester will begin Monday.
