Unofficial results in Eudora sales tax election for fire protection split exactly 50-50
Voters were split exactly 50-50 in unofficial election results Tuesday night on a half-cent sales tax in Eudora that would support three full-time firefighters and give the city around-the-clock-fire protection for the first time in its history.
The 0.5% sales tax had 1,150 votes for it and 1,150 against it in the results shared by the Douglas County Elections Office as of around 10 p.m.
The tax was proposed to fund public safety expenses and cover the roughly $330,000 price tag for three full-time firefighters, City Manager Zack Daniel previously told the Journal-World. It was proposed to go into effect when another 0.5% sales tax that financed the Eudora Community Center and Aquatic Center expires.
Currently, the city covers public safety equipment costs through property taxes in its general fund.
