Lawrence residents can have city staff fill their trucks or trailers with compost or wood chips on Saturday in the city’s first loading event of the season, the city announced on Tuesday.

The loading event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the city compost facility, 1420 E. 11th St. There, staff will load compost or wood chips into vehicles for $15 per scoop; a scoop is generally enough to fill the bed of a pickup truck.

Until 11th Street is free of vehicles, there will be a limit of one scoop per vehicle to keep traffic moving. The city will only accept payment in cash and will not accept bills larger than $20; residents are asked to bring exact change.

Only Lawrence residents may get compost or wood chips at the event, and proof of residency is required.

The compost facility is generally open on Saturday mornings from March through December for those who want to load compost themselves. Self-loading will not be available on Saturday, however. Three other city loading events are scheduled this year: May 2, June 6 and Oct. 3.
