Approximately 100 people gathered in downtown Lawrence Tuesday afternoon to protest the Trump administration and actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The protestors gathered at the four corners of Ninth and Massachusetts Street around 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Several in the crowd told the Journal-World they had heard about the event via social media. An Instagram post from the account “lawrenceks.studentvoices” shared a post five days ago about the protest.
Though many of the gathered crowd appeared to be high school students, residents of all ages also held signs and joined in chants against the Trump administration and ICE. Many cars that passed the intersection honked in a sign of support, leading to cheers from the crowd.
The protest is the second large protest against ICE led by students in downtown Lawrence in the last five days. Hundreds of protestors gathered in South Park on Friday afternoon for an “ICE Out” protest organized by Haskell Indian Nations University students, as the Journal-World reported.
