A protester holds a sign in front of Lawrence High School on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026.

After a Lawrence organization confirmed individuals were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this week, Haskell Indian Nations University students scheduled an “ICE OUT” protest.

The peaceful protest will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. “Let your voices be heard! Ice out! Join us for a peaceful protest. Let us stand together and fight for what is right,” a social media post for the event said. “No one is illegal on stolen land!”

As the Journal-World reported, Sanctuary Alliance of Lawrence initially reported that at least three individuals were detained by ICE agents on Tuesday morning, but later that evening, the organization confirmed that the total number of detainments that morning was actually five.

Sanctuary Alliance and another support service in Lawrence, Somos Lawrence, posted two hotline numbers for concerned residents to report ICE sightings and activity: (785) 289-5143 and (785) 813-1098. Both organizations advocate and provide resources and support to the local immigrant community.
