Up to 2 inches of snow expected, potentially creating slippery roads for Friday morning commute

The forecasted snow totals for northeastern Kansas, with snowfall amounts ranging from one to three inches.

An additional 2 inches of snowfall is expected later today, and it may result in slippery road conditions on Friday.

The National Weather Service office in Topeka expects a light snow to develop Thursday afternoon and to continue into the evening. The snow will end early Friday morning, and temperatures are projected to warm over the weekend. Freezing drizzle could precede the snow and also occur overnight.

Douglas County is expected to receive 1 to 2 inches of snow, while areas southeast of Interstate-35 may see up to 3 inches. In Lawrence, there’s a 40% chance of snow after 5 p.m., with temperatures peaking near 34 degrees on Thursday. Snowfall is expected to be more likely before midnight, with an 80% chance and a low around 23 degrees.

The Weather Service warned that driving conditions could be hazardous for Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.

On Friday, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 29 and drop to a low of about 11 overnight. This weekend, the weather will be slightly warmer, with Saturday’s high around 33 and a low near 25. Sunday will see a high of around 32 and a low around 12.

As the Journal-World reported, meteorologist Bill Gargan said that while northeastern Kansas could experience some snowfall, the heaviest accumulation is expected in southeastern counties. He said the heavier snow will mostly stay south across north Texas, eastern Oklahoma and up into eastern Missouri.
