A singing group composed of male inmates and others from area communities will give a free performance later this month in Lawrence.
The Arts In Prison ministry of Kansas will present the East Hills Singers, directed by Kirk Carson, at 4 p.m. on Nov. 24 at the First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St.
Admission is free with a goodwill offering to support Arts in Prison’s ministry.
Composed of inmates from Lansing Correctional Facility and area volunteers, the choir has been singing together since 1994, when it was founded by the late singer and educator Elvera Voth, who died in June. Voth believed that “something wonderful happens when a group of men sing together,” according to a news release about the event. This performance’s program is designed in her honor, the release said.
According to her obituary, Voth’s goal was to help rehabilitate inmates so they could return to society “with hope rather than hate in their hearts.”
