Weekly support groups available in Lawrence for people experiencing mental illness and their caregivers

A group that advocates for individuals experiencing mental illness and their caregivers is hosting weekly support groups designed to encourage empathy, promote discussion and build a sense of community.

“By sharing your experiences in a safe and confidential setting, you can gain hope and feel a sense of connection,” said Bill Wood, chairman of the steering committee for the Douglas County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. “We want you to know you’re not alone.”

The groups – one for adults who have experienced a mental illness, another for caregivers – meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vermont St. Participants are asked to enter using the double glass doors north of the main entrance.

The groups, which meet separately, are led by NAMI-trained facilitators.
