The Lawrence City Band performs its first concert of the season at South Park on Wednesday, May 26, 2021.

The first Lawrence City Band concert of the summer season will be indoors tonight because of the wet weather.

The free concert will begin at 8 p.m. at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive.

Normally the concerts take place in South Park, and residents bring blankets and lawn chairs to watch the musicians perform outdoors. However, Lawrence received nearly 4 inches of rain since Tuesday morning, and more rain was in the forecast through the end of the week.

Sponsored by the City of Lawrence and the Rice Foundation, the Lawrence City Band is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. every Wednesday through July 19.

The following are the musical themes for the concert series:

May 31 – Summertime Again in South Park

June 7 – South Park Classics

June 14 – City Band Fan Favorites

June 21 – Those Irish Eyes are Smiling

June 28 – More Movie Music!

July 5 – America on Parade

July 12 – Americana

July 19 – More Americana

The band is conducted by Paul Popiel.
