PHOTOS: Memorial Day weekend gets underway as groups and individuals honor the dead

A musical performance was part of the ceremony Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the grave of Alfred Bromelsick at Oak Hill Cemetery. Bromelsick was a Lawrence businessman and philanthropist, born in 1878, who left his estate to benefit youth organizations like Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H.

A number of groups and individuals are honoring the dead as Memorial Day weekend gets underway.

The group Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, with the help of 4-H members, placed hundreds of flags at Oak Hill, Maple Grove and Pioneer cemeteries in memory of military veterans.

Individuals also honored deceased family members with flowers, and scouts honored Alfred Bromelsick, a Lawrence philanthropist born in 1878 whose estate has long benefited multiple youth organizations in the area.
