The president of Lawrence’s PFLAG chapter is scheduled to discuss the impact of recent legislation affecting the LGBTQ community at an event this weekend.

Janis Guyot recently started the Lawrence chapter of PFLAG, which is a national organization that offers peer support services, education and advocacy for the LGBTQ community.

Guyot will be at the Lawrence Public Library event Saturday at 10:30 a.m. sponsored by the Lawrence/Douglas County chapter of Women for Kansas, a nonpartisan civic organization.

The Kansas Legislature has recently passed legislation barring transgender girls and women from participating in athletic activities and requiring that people use facilities — such as bathrooms and locker rooms — that accord with the sex listed on their birth certificates. The new laws are part of a larger push by Republicans across the U.S. to roll back LGBTQ rights, particularly transgender rights.

Last week Lawrence attorney David Brown announced his attention to assemble a team to prevent the legislation from taking effect this summer.
