Ten new works by Indigenous artists have been applied to glass bus shelters throughout Lawrence. This one, called "Less’ Riiide!" is at Bus stop 213 near the intersection of Harvard Road and Iowa Street. The artist is Tokeya Waci U (Comes Dancing First) Richardson.

Local Indigenous artists have created works that can be seen at bus shelters throughout the City of Lawrence.

The 10 artworks by six artists have been applied to glass bus shelters around town.

Lawrence Transit staff worked with the Indigenous Community Center on the bus stop beautification project, according to a news release from the city’s transit department. The ICC led the artist outreach and selection process.

“Lawrence Transit is for the community, and it’s a wonderful moment when even our bus shelters can reflect that,” said Felice Lavergne, a city transit planner. “We have a number of glass shelters across Lawrence, and it’s exciting to have so many of them showcase works by local Indigenous artists.”

With the completion of this project, almost half of Lawrence Transit’s glass bus shelters will feature art created by members of the community, the release said.

“It feels really good to see Indigenous artwork throughout our community,” the ICC said in the release. “We were more than happy to help facilitate this project by bringing local artists forward!”

The Douglas County Community Foundation provided funding for the project through the 2021 DCCF LiveWell Community Wellness Grant.
