Outdoor Parks and Recreation programming has been postponed through Thursday evening due to extreme heat, the City of Lawrence announced Monday afternoon.
All activities except for rescheduled adult sand volleyball leagues, which have been moved to indoor recreation centers, have been postponed. That includes the outdoor sand volleyball league for Thursday evening, which has been postponed and will be rescheduled, along with all adult softball, ultimate frisbee and youth baseball games scheduled from Monday night through Thursday.
All rentals and field reservation for baseball, softball, soccer, football and outdoor pickleball at the courts in Lyons Park and the courts outside Sports Pavilion Lawrence have also been canceled, according to the release. Refunds for those rentals will be issued to those affected.
Lawrence remains under an excessive heat warning through Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service, with high temperatures expected to top the 100-degree mark each day between now and then. The heat wave commenced Saturday in Lawrence, with the high temperature exceeding 105 degrees.
More information about closures and cancellations can be found on the Parks and Recreation website.
The city also announced Monday afternoon that it is canceling yard waste collection through Thursday, also in response to the high temperatures. In a social media post, the city said the decision to cancel that service was made because of the efficacy of the air conditioning units in the city’s solid waste trucks, which “can’t keep up with the temperature.”
A spokesperson with the city confirmed to the Journal-World Monday evening that normal trash service will continue as planned for now, though, and the city is moving its yard waste trucks over to the normal trash collection routes to provide more relief and breaks for crews who are out working in the field.
