FRIDAY

• As of this writing, spots were still available for “City Life: Active Shooter Training,” an online presentation, 4-5 p.m., from the Lawrence Police Department. Please register through the Lawrence Public Library at lplks.org.

• “Songbirds in the Round,” a concert featuring Kelly Hunt, Sarah Swenson and Christena Graves, will be presented at 7 p.m. at Vintage Church, 1501 New Hampshire St. Admission is $15. See vintagelawrence.com for more information.

• The Sandbar is having its annual end-of-summer block party Friday and Saturday on Eighth Street between Massachusetts and New Hampshire streets. “Pirate Fest” is free to attend on the street, $10 to enter the beer garden (21+). SATURDAY

• The Jayhawk Audubon Society is offering the Clinton Lake Field Trip, starting at 7:30 a.m. at the parking lot east of the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum at Bloomington Park, 716 North 1190 Road. The group will take a walk around the lot and the edge of the lake. Swallows, flycatchers, kingbirds, shorebirds and many other species might be visible.

• Want to take part in a vineyard harvest? The Seyval grapes are ready at the White Tail Run Winery and Vineyard, 2327 North 400 Road, Edgerton. From 7:30 a.m. to noon, volunteers will learn to pick grapes and get to watch the processing at the winery. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required; see eventbrite.com.

• It’s August Work Day at Clinton State Park, where a volunteer crew will be meeting at 8 a.m. to move gravel onto the joint trail west of mile 1 (parallel to the park’s entrance road, North 1415 Road). If you have a wheelbarrow, please bring it. If not, just bring yourself, as extra workers will be needed for shoveling and tamping down the gravel.

• If you’d like to help preserve a native prairie remnant, Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., need assistance with woody plant removal, focusing primarily on smooth sumac. The work session is 9 to 11 a.m. Know-how, tools and gloves will be provided. Wear long pants and closed shoes, and bring a water bottle, snacks, bug spray, hat and sun protection. • Shy 38 Inc. Kansas Farm Sanctuary is holding an open barn from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guided tours will be available, followed by a plant-based lunch. Tickets are $10; see social media or shy38.org for details.

• The Lawrence/Douglas County chapter of Women for Kansas is hosting a public forum from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. The editor and staff of the Kansas Reflector will be available for questions.

• It’s time for the monthly Lawrence Women’s Jam at Americana Music Academy, 1419 Massachusetts St. From 1 to 2:30 p.m. women of all skill levels and musical genres are invited to bring their instruments/voices to take turns in a relaxed, supportive song circle. Bring songs to share or just jam along.

• Art Love Collective is hosting the End of Summer Art Sale Pop-Up from 4 to 7 p.m. Collective members will be offering locally created art, jewelry, decor and Lawrence souvenirs at 646 Vermont St.

• The Lawrence Barn Dance Association is hosting a barn dance at the Lied Center Pavilion, 1600 Stewart Drive. A beginner’s lesson will start at 7 p.m., followed by the dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Caller Lisa Harris-Frydman will be backed by the live music of 32 Bartenders. • The Lawrence Public Library’s monthly Repair Studio will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at 707 Vermont St. Bring your broken, torn, nonworking items to the session and work with a mentor to troubleshoot repair options.

MONDAY

• It’s August Poetry Night at the Raven Book Store, 809 Massachusetts St. The 7 p.m. event will feature authors Melissa Fite Johnson from Lawrence and Lynne Jensen Lampe and Courtney LeBlanc from Missouri. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

• Note: The Pooch Plunge, originally scheduled for Monday, has been rescheduled for Aug. 21.

TUESDAY

• A Community Resource Clinic will take place in the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St., from 3 to 5 p.m. Drop in to pick up information on available assistance in legal, transportation and health care matters.

• Merchants Pub & Plate, 746 Massachusetts St., is hosting a book release celebration for “The Enduring Struggle for Freedom,” the second volume of the “Embattled Lawrence Kansas” series. Editor Dennis Domer and various featured authors will be available for book-signings. Drinks (and books) will be available for purchase from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

WEDNESDAY

• Douglas County Kansas Master Gardeners present “Black Farming Heritage of Douglas County,” from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m., at the K-State Research and Extension Office, 2110 Harper St.; it will also be presented on Zoom. Cody Haynes will explore the history of nonwhite farming communities in the county, highlighting Black communities displaced by the Clinton Dam project. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required at dgemgks.com.
