Public event to celebrate release of 2nd volume in ‘Embattled Lawrence’ series

Lawrence authors, history lovers and civil rights activists are celebrating the release of the second volume in the “Embattled Lawrence” series.
The volume, titled “The Enduring Struggle for Freedom,” published by the Watkins Museum of History and edited by retired University of Kansas professor Dennis Domer, is a collection of articles, poems, paintings and hundred of photographs exploring the history of Lawrence.
The book release celebration will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Merchants Pub & Plate, 746 Massachusetts St. Books will be available for purchase at the celebration and at the Raven Book Store in downtown Lawrence. Domer and various contributors to the book will be at Merchants Pub to sign copies.
The book has six sections: “Anti-Slavery,” “Struggles for Freedom,” “Haskell Indian Nations University,” “Tumultuous Years,” “Toward Equal Rights for All” and “Governing a Diverse City.”
The book is a sequel to “Embattled Lawrence: Conflict and Community,” published in 2001.
