This weekend features events for couples as well as opportunities for individual enrichment, musical entertainment, artistic insights, alien invasions, bird-watching and the annual seed exchange.

Thursday

• Insight Art Talk at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St., features Rachelle Gardner-Roe discussing her current exhibit, “Portal and Path,” which will be on display until Feb. 26. The artist will also discuss her commissioned piece for the new Kansas City International Airport. The talk begins at 7 p.m.

Friday

• Foxy by Proxy Revue is having its 12th annual Valentine’s Day Cabaret at Maceli’s, 1031 New Hampshire St. The theme this year is prom. Participants can get a prom picture at the photo booth and enjoy other prom activities. Doors open at 7 p.m., with a show at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. Foxy will require proof of vaccination (and of booster if eligible) and masks – surgical, K95 or KN95; no cloth masks permitted. See more details here.

• Prefer to stay in? Join your fellow B-movie fans for the virtual “Cinema a Go Go,” beginning at 7 p.m. Hosted by Darrell Brogdon and the Retro Cocktail Hour, Friday’s show is a double feature of alien invasions: “Devil Girl from Mars” (1954) and Roger Corman’s “Night of the Blood Beast” (1958). Admission is free, but viewers will need to register for access credentials.

• Aliens not your thing? You might want to attend the KU School of Music’s Scholarship Concert at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive. The music begins at 7:30 p.m.; attendance details and livestream link are available here.

Saturday

• Spring is still more than a month away, but local gardeners might be interested in the annual Kaw Valley Seed Fair at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St. Now in its 13th year, this event features more than 20 local vendors, but the main attraction is the array of exchange tables where seeds are shared. Doors open at 8:45 a.m., and the event continues until 2 p.m. Bring saved or prepackaged seeds to share, as well as your own containers or baggies.

• The Women’s Song Circle and Jam takes place the second Saturday of each month, 1:30-3 p.m., at Americana Music Academy, 1419 Massachusetts St. Participants can share a song or just play along. All instruments and skill levels are welcome.

• Kick off your Valentine celebration at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Massachusetts St., where the trio “With a Twist” will be performing from 6 to 8 p.m. in the lobby.

• The Free State Film Society will present “Night of 1,000 Candles,” an evening of film, music and candlelight at the Cider Gallery, 810 Pennsylvania St. Award-winning vocalist and harpist Calvin Arsenia will perform against the backdrop of experimental films by Maya Deren. • O’Connell Children’s Shelter is having its first Valentine’s fundraiser. “The Cupid’s Ball” at Pub & Hub, 1910 Haskell Ave., will include a live DJ, Secret Valentines, roses, chocolate strawberries, sparkling wine, games and a raffle to raise money for local youth. • The “Birding Walk and Prairie Seeding,” originally scheduled for Feb. 5 but postponed due to weather, will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Join the Grassland Heritage Foundation, Native Lands LLC, Jayhawk Audubon Society and Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park for a bird walk, followed by dispersal of native prairie seed previously collected and cleaned by volunteers. Meet at the Black Jack Battlefield site, 163 East 2000 Road, Wellsville.

• Opportunities for self-care are being offered at the Bluestem Yoga Give-Back Class. Everyone is welcome at 3727 W. Sixth St., from 2 to 3 p.m., for a series of heart-opening poses, gentle backbends and meditation. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for Lawrence Freedgin Kansas, a mutual aid organization dedicated to fighting food insecurity in the Lawrence community.
