Indigenous Community Center, in partnership with KU and Haskell, to host ‘Actions for Justice’ events honoring missing and murdered Indigenous women
In partnership with the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University, the Indigenous Community Center will be hosting a variety of events honoring missing and murdered Indigenous women during the next week.
The events — collectively called “Actions for Justice” — will kick off Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. at Broken Arrow Park with speakers, performers, raffles, and food and art vendors. The week of events coincides with National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day, which is Thursday.
Then, a number of events are on tap next week to continue building community awareness:
• On Monday, a free self-defense seminar is slated for 6 p.m. at Lawrence High School’s main gym, 1901 Louisiana St.
• On Tuesday, the public is invited to participate in a Justice Walk from KU to Lawrence City Hall. The walk starts at 4 p.m. in front of Watson Library.
• A forum and discussion about missing and murdered Indigenous women is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Parker Hall room 110 on Haskell’s campus.
• On Thursday, the public is invited to wear red and attend a pair of events: a fire lighting at sunrise and a walk at 6 p.m., both on Haskell’s campus.
Along with the single-day events, the ICC will also have a table at Wescoe Beach on KU’s campus Monday through Wednesday, where people can learn more about the movement. The ICC is also inviting the public to participate in a social media campaign throughout the week.
