This weekend in Lawrence: Victory parade for KU basketball, KU powwow, Farmer’s Market opening, Colson Whitehead and more

The big news this weekend is Sunday’s victory parade for the NCAA champion KU men’s basketball team. The parade might cause other events to be rescheduled, so call ahead if in doubt. Other weekend highlights are the Powwow and Indigenous Cultures Festival, the opening morning for the Downtown Lawrence Farmers’ Market and an evening with award-winning author Colson Whitehead.

FRIDAY

• The public is invited to “Soaring Stories,” hosted by Paper Plains: A Literary Festival from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Watkins Museum of History, 1047 Massachusetts St. The event continues from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday. See www.watkinsmuseum.org/soaring-stories for more.

SATURDAY

• Fresh local food and crafts will be on tap at opening day at the Lawrence Farmers’ Market, 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., at 824 New Hampshire St. The market season will continue through mid-November. See lawrencefarmersmarket.org.

• The East Lawrence Neighborhood Association presents “Yart Sale 2022” from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New York School gymnasium, 936 New York St. There will be original art, unique and gently used yard-sale items and live music.

• Another art-related opportunity happens at the Second Saturday Outdoor Art Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Warehouse Arts District in East Lawrence. Support local artists at Art Emergency, 721 E. Ninth St., and SeedCo Studios, 840 Delaware St., No. 7.

• The Train Park Tree Tour is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Buford M. Watson Jr. Park, 727 Kentucky St. Join former arborist and current Lawrence Public Library librarian Jake Vail for a leisurely walk in the park and an opportunity to learn about its trees. Meet by the train at 10 a.m.

• After two years of virtual attendance, the 2022 Benefit Art Auction makes an in-person return tonight at 6 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St. It’s the biggest fundraising event of the year for the Arts Center. • Doors open at 6 p.m. for “An Evening with Colson Whitehead,” 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. The Commons at KU, The Hall Center for the Humanities and Paper Plains Literary Festival are co-hosts for Whitehead, author of six novels, including the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Underground Railroad,” His latest novel is “Harlem Shuffle,” a bestseller and New York Times notable book of the year. SUNDAY

• The Kansas men’s basketball national championship celebration parade begins at 2 p.m. at Sixth and Massachusetts streets and goes south to 19th Street. The parade will include the Kansas Spirit Squad, band and NCAA champion basketball team. Beginning at 11 a.m., fans may park on the KU campus in Lot 90, the Burge Union and the Computer Center to catch a shuttle to and from the parade. Massachusetts Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 3 a.m. Sunday until approximately two hours after the parade.

• Ricardo Cavalcante, violist, will present his master’s recital at 5 p.m. at Swarthout Recital Hall. Carmen Ching will accompany on piano. Livestream available at youtube.com/c/KUSchoolofMusic.

• Gaslight Gardens, 317 N. Second St., will hold a “Winfield-Style Bluegrass Jam” at 5 p.m. This free event offers a chance for musicians and music lovers to participate or just listen and enjoy traditional acoustic music. All skill levels welcome.
