Eudora school board race separated by one vote; other area results

There were several contested city and school board races in the outlying parts of Douglas County, and one finished the night about as close as possible.

In a race for an unexpired seat on the Eudora USD 491 school board Charis Grosdidier was one vote ahead of Claire Harding for the position, as unofficial results were posted Tuesday evening. Those unofficial results include tallies from Douglas County, where Grosdidier was ahead by one vote, in Leavenworth County where Harding was ahead by two votes and in Johnson County where Grosdidier was ahead by two votes.

Election officials in all three counties still have provisional ballots to count, which could alter the outcome of the race. Final vote totals will be certified on Nov. 15 and a winner declared.

Here’s a look at other races from around the county:

• Jerry Smith and incumbent Susan Pitts both won seats on the Baldwin City Council. They did not face opposition.

• Casey Simoneau won another term as Baldwin City mayor, besting challenger Brian Cramer, 556 votes to 442.

• Eudora City Commission incumbents Tim Reazin and Jolene Born were the top two vote winners on Tuesday with 393 and 330 votes, respectively. Zachariah Brooks finished a close third with 320 votes.

• Jimmy Wilkins ran unopposed for Lecompton mayor, and Owen Malonee and Tim McNish also won terms on the Lecompton City Council after running unopposed.

• Joe Hurla, Heather Whalen and Eric Votaw all won seats on the Eudora USD 491 school board. Hurla and Votaw are incumbents, while incumbent Michael Kelso did not retain his seat, finishing in fourth.

• Incumbent Susan Schiffelbein retained her seat on the Baldwin City USD 348 school board, beating Victoria Yardley with 1,004 votes to 763. Incumbent Chris Perry also retained his seat on the board, besting challenger Steve Lyons 965 to 797. Incumbent Phillip Harvey also kept his seat, running unopposed.

• Kanwaka Township voters approved a special question allowing for the construction of a $110,000 maintenance building on township land at 548 North 1700 Road by a vote of 199 to 21.
