Bitter cold winter weather that moved into the Lawrence area over the weekend will stick around Monday and beyond.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory for Douglas County and surrounding areas until 9 p.m. Monday. The weather service warns that a glaze of ice could form on top of snow, creating hazardous travel conditions for areas along and southeast of the Kansas Turnpike.

After seeing light snow throughout the weekend, the Lawrence area has a 50% chance of additional snow and light freezing drizzle Monday, according to the weather service. Temperatures are predicted to reach only 10 degrees, and northwest winds of 5 to 15 mph could result in wind chill readings from 8 below to 2 above zero. Lows may reach around 4 degrees overnight, as wind chills stay below zero.

The rest of the week should be similarly cold. Highs are expected to stay in the mid-teens, some subzero overnight lows will be possible, and the lowest wind chill readings will be significantly below zero. Additional chances of snow are possible at the end of the week and into the weekend, according to the current long-term forecast.
