Fiddling & Picking Championships to fill Lawrence with music this weekend

The Kansas State Fiddling & Picking Championships are returning to Lawrence this weekend.

The 40th annual event will feature a slew of events starting today and culminating in Sunday’s contests and concerts in South Park.

To get things started, Gaslight Gardens, 317 N. Second St., will host Fidpick Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. today. Folks are invited to “grab a lawn chair … and enjoy the special expanded outdoor patio and listen to some live music” for $7. Pretend Friend and The Haymakers will play, and an acoustic jam session will follow.

On Saturday, Americana Music Academy, 1419 Massachusetts St., will conduct various workshops, concerts and jam sessions. For ticket prices and more details visit americanamusicacademy.com.

The main event Sunday will feature a full slate of musical events starting at noon, including a harmony singing contest and various stringed-instrument contests. The following acts will also perform: Wakarusa Roundabouts, Jenna & Martin, Spencer & Rains, and The New Time Bards.
