Oct. 12 COVID-19 update from the health department

Douglas County reported 2,625 cases of COVID-19 as of Monday, an increase of 52 cases since Friday.

In Douglas County, 2,258 out of the 2,625 cases are inactive or beyond the infectious period, according to Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health, meaning 368 cases are active.

Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health announced Monday that they are not including the average for the most recent three-day period in their 14-day moving average graph that shows new COVID-19 cases each weekday. This will “allow for more time for lab results to come in on those dates and to ensure a more complete calculation of the average for each day,” spokesperson George Diepenbrock wrote.

According to Monday’s graph, the county has averaged about 19 new cases per day over the last 14 days. The current average of 19 new cases per day is down from a high of 46 cases per day in early September and up from a recent low of nine cases per day in early August. The health department reported that the county’s 14-day average positivity rate is at 5.4%. This percentage has been on a downward trend since early September, when it hit a high of 9.8%.

Five patients at Lawrence’s hospital had COVID-19 on Monday, two more than Friday. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s online map noted that 31,625 Douglas County residents had been tested for the disease so far. The county’s testing rate per 1,000 people was 258.7.
