Fireworks, viewed in this photo from the Kansas River bridge, cap off Lawrence's Independence Day festivities Wednesday, July 4, 2018.

Burcham Park has reopened in time for a July 4 party and fireworks show that is planned along the Kansas River, the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department announced Wednesday.

Burcham Park, Riverfront Park and parts of the trail networks linked to them had been closed recently because of flooding from the river. Both parks have reopened, but some of the trails will remain closed, the parks department said in a news release.

The free Lawrence Go Fourth celebration is set for Thursday evening at Burcham Park and will feature live music and activities for kids, along with food and drink available to purchase. Gates to the park will open at 5 p.m. and the annual Lawrence Jaycees Club fireworks show is expected to begin shortly after 9:30 p.m., organizer Mike Logan of The Granada previously told the Journal-World. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., visitors can catch a shuttle to the park from Lawrence Public Library at Seventh and Vermont streets, Logan said.

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department on Wednesday also announced the reopening of a flooded portion of the South Lawrence Trafficway trail just west of the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum.
