Flooding closes several trails; grocery store temporarily shuts for weather-related repairs

Heavy rainfall prompted closures of several area trails on Thursday, and a local grocery store also briefly shut down because of issues related to the storm.

The trail connecting Burcham Park, 200 Indiana St., and Constant Park, 230 W. Sixth St., is currently closed because of flooding along the banks of the Kansas River, said Derek Rogers, director of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department.

A portion of the South Lawrence Trafficway trail near 31st and Louisiana streets has also been closed due to flash flooding, and the Eighth and Oak Street boat ramp and mountain bike trails in North Lawrence have been closed because of erosion from the heavy rain, Rogers said.

Rogers said he had no estimate for when any of the trails would reopen.

In addition, a manager at the Dillons grocery store at Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive said the store was closed between 9 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Thursday for weather-related repairs, but he didn’t specify what those repairs were. Calls to Kroger’s Kansas office in Hutchinson were not returned Thursday afternoon.
