A Douglas County property tax rebate program for low-income seniors and disabled veterans is now accepting applications for 2026.

The program is available to county residents who are 65 and older or who are disabled veterans. According to the Douglas County website, the maximum rebate payment per household is $400 and people have until April 15 to submit their application. Rebates will be mailed to applicants by July 2026.

The eligibility requirements also include:

• The applicant owns and occupies a home that is not used as a short-term rental.

• The home’s county appraised value is $350,000 or less.

• The applicant is at or below the Kansas Homestead Refund program income limit of $43,389 or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s very low income limits, whichever is higher for household size. Household income includes 50% of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, and it excludes disability payments.

As the Journal-World reported, the rebate program was approved by county commissioners in 2024.
