To provide tax relief for low-income seniors and disabled veterans, Douglas County will be offering a one-year property tax rebate program.

The tax rebate program is available to Douglas County residents who are 65 and older or who are disabled veterans. According to a news release from the county, the maximum rebate payment per household is $300 or the county portion of property tax, whichever is less. As the Journal-World reported, the program would allow for just more than 1,600 households to receive a $300 rebate.

There are also other eligibility requirements, including:

* Owning and occupying a home that is not used as a short-term rental.

* The home’s county appraised value is $350,000 or less.

* Household income is at or below U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s very low-income limits. For a household of one, the maximum income limit is $35,700, and for two, it is $40,800.

The program is a joint effort involving several county departments, including the clerk’s office, treasurer’s office, appraiser’s office and administration. The county commissioners authorized the pilot program on Oct. 2, 2024, with $500,000 allocated from the county’s general fund reserves. According to the news release, Johnson County is currently the only other county in Kansas offering a similar property tax relief program.

To apply, visit the county’s website at dgcoks.gov/taxrebate. Submissions will require proof of income and other required documents by April 15. Rebate payments will be mailed to applicants by July 2025.
