The Douglas County Treasurer’s Office will begin offering its services in another Lawrence location, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the new, larger space on Sixth Street.

“We are excited to offer our services in a larger building that will have more parking spaces and a lobby area. It will be more accessible than our current locations,” Treasurer Adam Rains said in a press release Wednesday.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 28, the Douglas County Treasurer’s Office will provide services at two locations in Lawrence: the historic County Courthouse at 1100 Massachusetts St. and the new office at 2601 W. Sixth St. Both offices will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

A ribbon-cutting will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the new Sixth Street office, a 5,054-square-foot space. The facility includes a lobby with seating, close parking and a drop box for convenience. Funded by federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars and renovated with the Capital Improvement contingency fund, the project totaled $1.6 million, according to a press release.

With the opening of the new office, the Treasurer’s Office will close its satellite location at 2000 W. 31st St. in south Lawrence at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25. The Treasurer’s Office will continue operations at its Baldwin City office, located inside Baldwin City Market at 112 Eighth St., which remains open during the second full week of each month.

The Treasurer’s Office collects and distributes property taxes to the state and local districts, including townships and schools. Additionally, it manages the county’s motor vehicle department, handling over 130,000 transactions each year. Residents can also renew their motor vehicle taxes and pay property taxes online at the Treasurer’s Office website.
